Facial Reconstruction Q & A
What is facial reconstruction?
Facial cosmetic surgery, or plastic surgery, is different from facial reconstruction. Cosmetic surgery is done to enhance your appearance by reshaping, resizing, lifting, or making other changes to your face, nose, and other facial structures.
Facial reconstructive surgery is performed to improve function and give you a better quality of life. Reconstructive surgery corrects abnormal structures of your face, neck, and head, which may be caused by:
- Birth defects
- Developmental abnormalities
- Trauma or injury
- Tumors (benign or cancerous)
- Infection or disease
Although the first goal of facial reconstruction is to restore function, Dr. Salkinder also protects and preserves your appearance.
What are the different types of facial reconstruction?
Facial reconstruction ranges from simple scar removal to highly complex procedures. A few examples of facial conditions treated with reconstruction include:
- Cleft lip and cleft palate: surgery repairs birth defects that cause openings in the upper lip and roof of the mouth
- Facial paralysis: reconstruction improves facial deformities caused by paralysis, including improving facial symmetry and restoring animation
- Facial trauma: repairs and rebuilds facial structures damaged by fractures and lacerations
- Ear reconstruction: rebuilds or creates a partial or total ear that’s missing due to congenital defect or trauma
- Nose deformity: corrects structural deformities that affect breathing
- Scar revision: reduce and minimize facial scars
Damage to your face, head, and neck -- whether from an accident, sports or work-related injuries, or surgery to remove a tumor -- can often be improved with facial reconstruction performed by Dr. Salkinder.
When is facial reconstruction needed after cancer removal?
While several types of cancer can create the need for facial reconstruction, nonmelanoma skin cancers are the most common cancers in the United States and the most common skin cancers affecting the face, head, and neck.
When surgery to remove your cancer is deep, disfiguring, covers a large area, or leaves a scar, facial reconstruction can restore the underlying structures and improve your appearance.
Facial reconstruction is performed using a variety of surgical techniques. Dr. Salkinder may graft skin from another part of your body or use nearby skin as a flap to cover the area needing restoration. In some cases, large or deep defects may need a transfer of bone or muscle.
When Dr. Salkinder removes cancer from your head, neck, or face, he may perform reconstruction at the same time.
